Departing from Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur has 2 main airports, but nearly all flights to Bangkok depart from the main airport, Kuala Lumpur International (KUL).
This is split into 2 terminals, housed in separate buildings 2km apart:
- KLIA for full-price airlines such as Bangkok Airways and Malaysia Airlines
- klia2 for low-cost carriers such as AirAsia and Malindo Air
If you go to the wrong terminal, a free shuttle bus travels between the terminals throughout the day. You should aim to arrive 3 hours before international flights to give you enough time to check in, complete immigration and find your gate.
Arriving in Bangkok
Bangkok has 2 international airports:
- Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK) serves budget airlines
- Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) serves all other airlines
Don Mueang is closer to the city centre, taking 20 minutes in normal traffic and costing 330-400 baht. A bus is much cheaper, but can take up to an hour.
A taxi from Suvarnabhumi costs 400-500 baht, but this airport has the advantage of a direct rail link. Expect to pay 40-55 baht from BKK to Phaya Thai station.
