Beyond Trinidad’s beaches
Things to do in Trinidad
Not just known for its serene sandy shorelines, Trinidad is also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts in general. As well as exploring its pristine shorelines for a little relaxation, there are plenty of other activities to add to your vacation itinerary.
Head into the verdant Northern Range hills that sit just below some of Trinidad’s best beaches for a hike. As this region is so wild and untouched, you’ll want to hire a local guide to help you navigate through its thick vegetation. The choice of trails varies too, from dramatic gorges to those that lead to refreshing hidden waterfalls. Whatever you choose, the views are sure to be spectacular.
Elsewhere, there’s a range of water-based activities to get stuck into – from snorkelling to kayaking. If your trip falls between March and August, you might be lucky to spot turtles nesting at locations like Matara Bay and Grand Riviera Beach (both on the north coast). Just remember to keep your distance and avoid disturbing them at all costs.
Alternatively, enjoy a spot of birdwatching at the Caroni Bird Sanctuary just south of Port of Spain. The huge mangrove forest, with its turquoise lagoons and winding waterways, is home to over 100 different species. Go there on a boat tour and keep your eyes peeled for scarlet ibis (Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird) brightening up the skies.
