Launceston Airport is the main transit hub for this delightful city in Tasmania. It is a small airport, but has fair amount of facilities, which include public telephones, cash machines, coffee bars, a café, and the Launceston Store, a retailer offering local goods.
The airport is a short 15km outside of the city centre, and can be accessed via shuttle bus, rental cars, or by taking a taxi (approximately $30-35 for a single journey).
Carriers that fly routes to Launceston are Jetstar and Virgin Australia, Qantas, and Sharp Airlines.
Why visit Launceston?
Though Launceston is Tasmania’s second largest city, it is second to none in everything else. Having been established in 1806, Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest cities and is rife with history and heritage buildings. Luckily, this city also comes complete with a trendy bar and restaurant scene, an excellent nightlife, lots of shopping, and a gorgeous surrounding wilderness, that only add to its lure.
Things to do in Launceston
Launceston boasts a ton of Colonial and Victorian architecture, which makes for wandering around the city streets an experience in itself. Go on a few of the heritage walks of the city, such as the Merchants Machinery Trail, which looks back at the industrial past of the city, or the Rags to Riches Trail, which looks at how the town prospered.
There is a Government to Gorge trail too, which ends at the city’s main attraction, the lovely Cataract Gorge. Take the chairlift for the best views of the surrounds, or hop onto a river cruise and be awed by the rising cliffs that encircle the water.
For a little culture, you cannot go wrong by visiting the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, charting both the natural and artistic history of the city, and with a free admission to boot.
Outdoor adventure in Launceston comes in the form of the Tamar Island Wetlands, perfect for bird watchers, or nature lovers alike. For the adrenalin junkies, there’s the Hollybank Treetops, where visitors can zip line through the trees for a birds-eye view of the forest below.
Best time to visit Launceston
· Tasmania is a lot cooler than mainland Australia, but the summers in Launceston are lovely, ranging between 12-24°C.
· If you visit in the winter, make sure you pack a few layers, and enjoy sitting by fires after a day of exploring, as this chilly season hovers around 2-11°C.
