Discover Cairo
Located northeast of the city centre, Cairo International Airport is the busiest airport in Egypt and one of the busiest on the African continent. The capital city airport started as a naval base, but now houses four terminals connected via a free airport shuttle.
There are many ways to get from the airport to the heart of the city upon your arrival. The Cairo Shuttle Bus is an affordable and efficient option that operates all day every day and connects you to various destinations within the city. If you would like to experience public transportation, head to the bus terminal located within walking distance to Terminal 2. A limousine or taxi are also a great ways to travel. The prices are fixed depending on the destination and the car category, so you get to pick before boarding!
If you have more than half a day to spare, the Pyramids of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) located in the outskirts of Cairo is an attraction you cannot miss out on. Don’t let the 42 km journey from the airport put you off from visiting one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring man-made structures on Earth. Crowned the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one still intact, the largest pyramid in the Giza Necropolis will undeniably be the highlight of the trip. However, if you suffer from claustrophobia or simply don't like small spaces, you might want to think twice about tours into the heart of the pyramids. For thrill-seekers and history junkies, it will be an adventure that will occupy your thoughts for days or even weeks.
When you’re done exploring the chambers of the pyramids, say hello to their mysterious neighbour, the Sphinx. The mythical creature with the body of a lion and a human head is featured prominently in Egyptian tradition and is often viewed as benevolent tomb and temple guardian. Although the larger-than-life monument has been weathered by time, it remains one of Egypt’s most popular sights.
A closer option to the airport would be one of Cairo’s favourite recreational areas, Al Azhar Park. Located in the centre of downtown Cairo, a half an hour drive from the airport will bring you to the oasis of green, where you can rejuvenate your senses. Enjoy the tranquil tree-lined paths, soothing fountains and colourful gardens before having a leisurely meal at one of the park’s many restaurants. The park also offers breath-taking views of the medieval section of Cairo.
