Bora Bora sits in a jeweled lagoon, and the forested hills rising from its heart are fringed by perfect white sands, which are further ringed by a rainbow reef. With all this jaw-dropping beauty, it is hard to imagine a place more suited to the words: "island getaway".

Sunbathe on Matira Beach all day and work on your tan, or pop on your snorkelling mask and discover the colourful clownfish, the red snapper or jackfish that populate the reef. Alternatively, take to the deeper waters, and go on a diving trip for a chance at spotting the giant manta ray, the mysterious hammerhead shark, or the gentle sea turtle. Or stay above water and take a boat out for a spot of whale watching.

In the evening wander Vaitape, the town on Bora Bora famed for fine dining, luxury shopping, and its excellent natural aquarium.
