The city of Edinburgh has been recognised as the capital of Scotland since the 15th century. The city of Edinburgh is considered to be very rich in history. Historical landmarks in the city include the Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, and the churches of St. Giles, Greyfriars, and Canongate.
Holyrood Palace – The Holyrood Palace is the royal family’s official residence in Scotland. Moreover, it is also the 16th century home of Mary the Queen of Scots. Unfortunately for travellers, the palace is closed to the public when the royal family is visiting and during state functions. These events are usually in mid-May, and mid-June to early July. Details about events can be found at the website. Those who are planning to visit can expect a self-guided audio tour that will lead travellers through a series of impressive royal apartments, ending in the Great Gallery. Those visiting can also find 89 portraits of Scottish kings that were commissioned by Charles II and are supposedly a record of his unbroken lineage from Scota, the Egyptian pharaoh's daughter who discovered the infant Moses in a reed basket on the banks of the Nile. The highlight of the tour however is visiting bed chamber of Mary the Queen of Scots. This was home to the unfortunate Mary from 1561 to 1567, and was connected by a secret stairway to her husband's bedchamber. It is said that this place is where Mary's jealous first husband, Lord Darnley, restrained the pregnant queen while his henchmen murdered her secretary.
Edinburgh Castle – This place plays a key role in Scottish history, serving both as a royal residence to King Malcolm Canmore and Queen Margaret as well as a military stronghold. The last time that the place has ever witnessed military activity was 1745. It now serves as one of the most expensive and most sought after tourist attractions in Scotland.
St. Giles Cathedral – Formerly known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, the St. Giles Cathedral was named after the patron saint for the crippled and beggars. Currently it is one of the most visited attractions for tourists and is the principal place of worship in Edinburgh, Scotland.
