Things to do in Adelaide, Australia

A great way to start your stay in Adelaide is to explore the city centre. From here you can tour Adelaide’s premier museums and galleries, such as Ayers House, and the Art Gallery of South Australia. On this side of town you can also easily make a stop in the Central Market and wander through Chinatown.

If you’re with your family, there are great kid-friendly exhibitions in the South Australia Museum, and you’ll find that the lovely Botanic Gardens and the popular Adelaide Zoo are all within close proximity of the CBD. There’s also a lot going on down by the Port River Promenade, where you can book a dolphin cruise or have a look into the Maritime Museum.

For those wanting to take advantage of the coastline, head down to Glenelg, where there are lots of cafes to keep you fed and watered if you spend the day sunbathing.

If you have the time, it is worth spending a day up in the Adelaide Hills, where some of the oldest parts of Adelaide remain. From here you can hike up Mount Lofty and enjoy the best view the city has to offer. When you come down, book a trip out to the Barossa and Clare Valleys regions, it is out here where you will be able to make the most of the fabulous wine country that Adelaide is known worldwide for.

• Summer is the best season to stay in Adelaide, as you will find the temperatures are warm, and the weather dry. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen though, as highs can reach up to 29°C. 
• Winters are mild, but wet. If you come during this season, bring a waterproof and some layers as the mercury can sink to about 7-8°C.

• It’s estimated that the best time to book any flight is around 17 weeks before you depart. Though if you’re flying from Melbourne, you can leave less time.

Arriving in Adelaide, Australia by plane

• Adelaide Airport (ADL) is the major transport hub of the city.  Airline carriers that fly into ADL are Qantas, Jetstar, Tigerair, Regional Express, Virgin Australia, Sharp Airlines and Singapore Airlines.  
• The airport is located 6km from Adelaide’s city centre, an easy and convenient distance to traverse. The airport has a variety of bars and food kiosks, a few retail stores, as well as access to free wireless Internet and cash machines.  
• There are daily, non-stop flights to Adelaide from every major city in Australia. 

Visa requirements

• If you do not carry Australian citizenship, and are flying into Adelaide from outside Australia, you will need to apply for a visa. There is a comprehensive guide you can find here, which will list any requirements the Australian government will need.  

Transportation to city centre

• Expect to pay about $20-25 for a taxi into Adelaide CBD.  
• You can take the JetExpress, the city’s public transport option that will run you into the city. Skyscanner can also arrange an airport transfer if you’d rather book ahead.

Where to stay in Adelaide, Australia

• To be in the heart of the city, with access to lots of attractions, book in the city centre. You’ll find most of the budget accommodation options are situated here too.  
• For upmarket and high-end hotels, North Adelaide is the place to look for accommodation. There are lots of restaurants and bars in this area, and there are good links into the centre.  
• If you’d rather be lying on a beach than wandering the city streets, then Glenelg is the place to be. You’ll find options that suit both a tight budget and a lavish one.

• Make the time for Adelaide’s spectacular wine country, only a short drive outside of the city.
